Some of the more popular airplane wrecks dives in Truk Lagoon include the Kawanishi H8K1 Emily Flying Boat and the Mitsubishi G4M Betty Bomber. Bomber aircraft were often given female names and fighter aircraft were often nicknamed with men’s names. The Emily Flying Boat was known for its long range and nicknamed the Flying Porcupine was very difficult to shoot down because it had self-sealing fuel tanks and internal fire extinguishers. It held a crew of 16, had a 37m (...124ft) wingspan and was 28m (92ft) long. It had four 1850 horsepower Mitsubishi Kasei engines. Kensho Maru was discovered in 1980 by Klaus Lindermann (author of "Hailstorm Over Truk Lagoon"). However, some records maintain that the Cousteau expedition was the first to locate the remains. This 116 m long (384.4 ft) and 16 m (52.5 ft) wide and 4,862 ton passenger and cargo ship wreck lies 36 meters underwater and rests in an upright position. Struck and sunk by three 500-pound bombs on her stern, the Nippo Maru was a 106 m (350 ft) transport ship that carried primarily water. Originally a passenger and cargo freighter, it was captured in 1941 by the Japanese and sits nearly upright with a 20-degree port list between 15 and 45 m (50-150 ft). The Nippo Maru has a very remarkable wheelhouse with an intact telegraph and rudder. Hold # 4 is particularly interesting with its aluminum water containers, bottles, and bicyc...le parts. In the bow on the port side is a small, almost intact tank, as well as a truck chassis. The transport ship (also known as Nichiho Maru) was torpedoed and sunk on October 27, 1944 in the Balabac Strait west of the Palawan Pass (07 17'N 116 45'E) by the USS Bergall. The trucks have right hand steering wheels and the tractor looks similar to a John Deere model. Originally named the Hauraki, this ship was a British/New Zealand cargo and passenger ship launched in 1921 and seized by the Japanese in 1942. Renamed the Hoki Maru she was used for special transpor...t. Sitting around 49m (160ft) in the sand, this 137m (450ft) ship’s bow was severely damaged by two 1000 pound bombs that hit the port side igniting fuel and causing a massive explosion and fire.
