‘ By the time Emily Dickinson was 14 years old, she had undertaken the compilation of an herbarium, a book of pressed flowers and plants, a popular hobby among ...the girls of her time Dickinson, the reclusive poet whose extensive work was discovered and published in its entirety only after her death in 1886, was better known in her lifetime for her expert gardening skills than her poetry. She helped her mother in the garden from a young age and later tended plants in her own conservatory. Assembled in a patterned green album bought from the Springfield stationer G. & C. Merriam, the herbarium contains 424 specimens arranged on 66 leaves and delicately attached with small strips of paper. The specimens are either native plants, plants naturalized to Western Massachusetts, where Dickinson lived, or houseplants. Every page is accompanied by a transcription of Dickinson’s neat handwritten labels, which identifies each plant by its scientific name.' In a letter to a friend Dickinson wrote: ‘Did you ever know that a flower, once withered and freshened again, becomes an immortal flower, that is, that it rises again?’ The album is now part of the Emily Dickinson Collection at Houghton Library, Harvard University

Just finished this book, Never Home Alone by Rob Dunn. WOW was I not prepared for my mind to be blown so many times. This is one of the most critical books fo...r anyone in the urban planning or environmental field to read because it links our everyday lives and health with biodiversity. Here’s a few concepts covered/quotes: Loss of outdoor biodiversity leads to loss of indoor biodiversity which leads weakened immune systems due to microbe alterations which causing chronic inflammatory disease greater biodiveristy in ground water is linked to greater local endemic species presence Toxoplasma gondii - if you don’t know about this you should look into it. It’s a parasite that can only breed in cat’s stomaches. To get into cats, it infects mice first. It’s been found to influence the behaviour of mice by making them more likely to avoid cat urine which usually helps them avoid being hunted. They also confront cats more often. It starts getting weird when they find how many cat owners are infected as well. They then draw a link to humans behaviour who are infected. They take more risks, are more aggressive, and are more prone to psychosis. Unknown species - the author emphasizes to take photos and be aware of life you see in your home, as there are many undiscovered species. Not many people study the life directly among us. It’s known in Korea that kimchi taste different based on the person who makes it. The author conducted studies on bakers and found a correlation between the bacteria on bakers hands and bacteria in the bread which influences taste. The bacteria on bakers hands is influenced by bacteria in their houses. Take aways: - leave the window open to let in microbial biodiversity - put your hand in soil (even a house plant) every now and then - question your choice to own a dog or cat (if you weren’t already convinced by their impact on the environment) - incorporate native plant biodiversity around your house - when washing your hands, make sure it’s for at least 20 seconds - consider a career in the very unknown frontier of microbiology! Thanks Rob !
