Yesterday I went trekking to probably the best known and most visited lake in Ushuaia - Laguna Esmeralda. . As many of you know I’m not a fan of trekking places where a lot of people go or might be, but...I got a trekking partner for the day who was willing to leave early and we were between the first 8-10 people arriving at the lake. . The scenery is spectacular although I didn’t doubt for a moment that it would be. A great day on a fairly easy and leisurely trek. In my top 3 most spectacular trekking views ever; these photos don’t even start to do justice to the actual views. . The view included the whole length of the Carbajal Valley with Laguna Arcoíris (rainbow) to the east and beyond that Tierra Mayor. . The red colour is the turba, waterlogged peat bog and one of the biggest natural net sinks of CO2, bigger than moss. Also a water filter, enough to drink. ... . The patches of dead trees more to the west (almost straight down shots) is the result of beaver devastation, an exotic animal imported for fur in the 1940-1950’s. . Tierra del Fuego on the Argentinian side is home to 95% of Argentina’s peatlands. See more
