Hey guys! I keep seeing posts about rigging sails and I just wanted to say that it's almost always the downhaul that's the issue. Don't worry about what the tex...t on the sail says, the mast needs to be as long as it needs to be regardless of what the manufaturer thought it should have been when the sail was new. Yes, pulling downhaul hurts and not everyone are able to do it with just hands. I wrap the hook from my harness around the line and pull until I see what is illustrated in the picture. But seriously, hard. Like really hard. If you can do it barefoot then you either aren't pulling hard enough or you should enter coal walking competitions ;) Do it right, you'll thank me. The feeling of the sail changes completely. Outhaul is less important and can be good to play around with in different wind conditions.
