Here is my contribution for this wonderful group and idea created by Alessandro Serra. I was going to record one of the Bille 24 Caprices but since there are pl...enty of Italian Etudes in the group made by wonderful players I’ve decided to record this beautiful Crab Etude by my teacher François Rabbath. I learned it last Wednesday and had the good fortune of going though the piece with the master himself this Saturday. It is a lovely etude that challenges the bassist intonation with it is hybrid arpeggios and runs and large dissonant intervals. Please check my personal page for weekly posts of the Bille Caprices. The band is an ...all-star team (Swallow on Fender bass, Bob Moses (d), Steve Kuhn (p), Dave Liebman - who had not yet given up the tenor, Lyle Mays (syn)), Sheila Jordan is transplendent, and Steve’s compositions are delicious. By the way, I once saw Wayne Shorter open a set with In the Fall from this album. It was one of those game recognize game moments - Shorter, arguably the greatest living composer in Jazz - covering a tune by another great composer. And the pounding rhythm was perfect for the electric band that Wayne was fronting.

I am very grateful to François Rabbath for his contributions to the world of upright bass playing and study. Every so often I see posts about what people think ...of ‘The Rabbath Method’ or approach or school of playing. This is a recent response I made to a thread of comments reflecting how people tend to perceive his approach and what I think it is all about. The Rabbath approach to playing is about beginning with what he calls Le Son Premier. It is the embodiment of a relaxed and open tone that is is as free and unencumbered as an orchestral pizzicato allowed to ring. In order to accomplish this one must develop a way to hold and support the instrument that does not create tension. The sole purpose of the angled Endpin is to allow one to open the face of the instrument more, without adding undue weight and pressure on the left thumb. In order to allow the string to vibrate freely the wrist and fingers of the right hand (bow arm) need to be aligned properly and relaxed enough to react to movement of the arm in a relatively passive way, allowing the natural weight and movement of the body and arm to initiate the stroke and interfere as little as possible with the natural vibration. But this is only the beginning!!! The Son Premier, the First Sound is Rabbath’s base of operations, the default method of tone production, the basis for what he calls Le Palette Sonore, wherein one intentionally varies the basic sound using the 3 criteria of weight, speed and placement to affect tone color, intensity, density and feeling of the sound. He has also developed the 7 families of bowstrokes which systematically vary the role and position of the hand, wrist and fingers to accomplish more specific strokes, like spiccato, bariollage, sautille etc. I have spent the last 20 years developing my own sound based on these principles and I could use another lifetime to explore them. Rabbath’s approach is concerned with freedom of movement, flexibility and relaxed sound production. It is not about style. His approach can be adapted to any style or musical tradition. He played with the Paris Opera for 15 years.
